In 1941, the Great Patriotic War interrupted activities of the school.

From 1953 to 1967, dormitories for the University staff and students, a library, and a sports building with four gyms were constructed.

On April 7, 2005, the Institute was granted a new accreditation status «Academy». Thus, Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education «Smolensk State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports, and Tourism» started its activities
